Saving Flash and Shockwave Video Files to Your Computer

Mozilla Firefox browser is highly recommended.

Method # 1

Will work virtually for any site if you use Mozilla Firefox browser.
1. Open the page with a file that you would like to download.
2. Open a new window or tab.
3. Type “about:cache?device=memory” in the Location Bar.
4. Look for files with an .flv extension (flash video format) or a link with a word “video” in it.
Tip: recently accessed files will be listed first.
5. Select the link, copy it (do not use "Copy Link Location") to the Location Bar and press “Enter”.
6. Close the page that is using the video file. Download window should appear shortly after that.
Important: If your file has no extension (like YouTube video), append it with “.flv”.

Method # 2
Download OrbitDownloader. After you successfully install it,
right-click on a browser page with a video you would like to keep and choose "Grab Video by Orbit".

Method # 3
Mozilla Firefox Users:
Download and install VideoDownloader add-on.
After you have successfully installed it, new icon should appear in the right bottom part of the browser.
After you open the page with a video, click the icon to get the direct download link.

Both Intenet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox Users:

There is no free add-on for Internet Explorer available, but you can go to http://www.keepvid.com and paste the link of the video file into the special line at the top of the page. A direct download link should appear shortly after you click "Submit".

Note: to get initial link for your video, right-click it and choose "Copy Shortcut" (an example of a link is "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSf5q3wrgnk").

Note: when saving the file add an .flv (which stands for Flash Video) extension to it, for example, "Video1.flv".

Method # 3 should help you download flash videos from the following sites:
YouTube, Google Video, iFilm, Metacafe, Dailymotion, Myspace, Angry Alien, AnimeEpisodes.Net, Badjojo, Blastro, Blennus, Blip.tv, Bofunk, Bolt, Break.com, Castpost, CollegeHumor, Current TV, Dachix, Danerd, DailySixer.com, DevilDucky, Double Agent, eVideoShare, EVTV1, FindVideos, Free Video Blog, Grinvi, Grouper, Hiphopdeal, Kontraband, Lulu TV, Midis.biz, Music.com, MusicVideoCodes.info, MySpace Video Code, Newgrounds, NothingToxic, PcPlanets, Pixparty, PlsThx, Putfile, Revver, Sharkle, SmitHappens, StreetFire, That Video Site, TotallyCrap, VideoCodes4U, VideoCodesWorld, VideoCodeZone, vidiLife, Vimeo, vSocial, Yikers, ZippyVideos.

Now you can even use a download manager like FlashGet (free), GetRight or ReGet to download the file faster using download link.

Viewing Flash Video (.flv) Files

Use BitComet FLV Player,
FLV Player, Media Player Classic, RIVA FLV Player (comes with Riva FLV Encoder), or VLC Media Player (all are free).

I would recommend
Media Player Classic, since it plays almost any audio or video file format.

Converting Flash Video (*.flv) Files

Use freeware MediaCoder or Super (recommended) to convert .flv or .swf files to most popular video formats (AVI, MOV, MP4, WMV, or VOB).

Some Flash Facts

Flash was developed by Macromedia Incorporated, and is now distributed by Adobe Systems Incorporated.
Flash was introduced in year 1996.
Flash becomes more and more popular in building websites, especially in adding animation and interactivity to them. Flash Video is the most used format for delivery of video in the Internet today.

Flash files (movies) have .swf extension, while Flash Video files have .flv extension.
The video in Flash is encoded in H.263 format, while the audio, in mp3.

Shockwave platform is mostly used for applications, such as gaming, rather than streaming video (content) itself.

More information on Flash and Shockwave platforms can be found on Adobe site.
